Do we get any sleep?

The first question most friends ask us when we meet these days is "Do you get any sleep?".

Well, it depends. We still feed Elin, Oscar and Filip every three hours - at midnight, (approximately) 3 AM and 6 AM. If we stay up until midnight and then need to stay up after having fed the babies at 6 AM (e.g. when one of need to take the older kids to school and daycare), the simple answer is that we do not get enough sleep. We have to add some by taking a nice nap during the day and/or to sleep an hour or two in between the 9 PM meal and midnight.

At times one of us choose to feed the babies alone, letting the spouse continue to sleep. This may work unless one, two or three babies are very hungry and makes too much noise while the milk is heated and the bottles prepared. This will wake us both.

During the last week we have established that the babies will wake us up when they are getting hungry, in time before they are too hungry. This was not the case previously, forcing us to use an alarm to get up in time.

An important key to get any sleep at all is that all three babies eat at the same time and sleep at the same time. There has been nights when they have been fully "out of sync", keeping us awake all night. So our first rule at night is that when one wakes up and seems hungry, we fix milk for ALL three, feed them ALL and change diapers and put them ALL to bed again at the same time.

We hope that we in a few weeks time can shift into feeding every four hours, since that should improve our sleeping drastically.
